you can actually still be diagnosed with hysteria. they call it “conversion disorder” now, which essentially means “mental health problem/unaddressed trauma manifesting as literally any severe and inexplicable physical symptom”. almost everyone diagnosed with it is a woman.
(it’s also worth noting that most people who recieve a diagnosis of conversion disorder, afaik, actually have myalgic encephalitis/chronic fatigue syndrome. here is jen brea’s beautiful ted talk addressing CFS and her previous misdiagnosis)
