“The Kent State shootings (also known as the May 4 massacre or the Kent State massacre)[3][4][5] were the shootings on May 4, 1970 of unarmed college students by members of the Ohio National Guard at Kent State University in Kent, Ohio during a mass protest against the bombing of Cambodia by United States military forces. Twenty-eight guardsmen fired approximately 67 rounds over a period of 13 seconds, killing four students and wounding nine others, one of whom suffered permanent paralysis.[6][7]”
Don’t forget that basically half the country thought the students deserved it…
Another picture from Kent State.
But it was not just Kent State, eleven days later Mississippi Police fired 150 rounds into a dormitory at Jackson State College, killing 2 and wounding 15 black protesters.
Btw half of the students killed at Kent State weren’t even protesting, they were just there
What in the absolute fuck
When the Irish guy has known about this since he was like 8, but it’s suspiciously hard for Americans to learn about…
I literally only know abt this bc my parents are hippies it’s fucked up
I only had a vague idea of what this was and what happened until I did my own research on it.
When I was 21.
Im 21 and i just learned about this like tf????
I’m a Kent State Alumni and what’s even worse about this is the University itself tried to cover this up. They hid a famous sculpture on entropy up until literally last year,b/c it was put in a few years before this event, and someone spray painted “May 4th” on it, so they planted trees around and hid it. Recently because the artist is now dead they finally cleared away some of the over growth but they literally tried to hide it. They put a parking lot over the place it happened and only recently put up a plaque to acknowledge it. Here’s a link on “Partially Buried Woodshed”:
This same artist btw is the guy ( Smithson) who did this: the Spiral Jetty in Salt Lake
Now there is a who May 4th task Force that host an event on the day every year with a speaker so at least students don’t forget.
It hurts because my grandma was across the street picking up coffees for her friends at the protest that day, she lived because the shop owner wouldn’t let her leave once the National Guard fired on the students but several of those who died were her friends. And nobody remembers, but every year she tells me the story and sobs.
