I’m so tired of people telling me German is an “ugly, angry” language. When my German teacher tells us jokes it’s the sweetest, happiest language in the world. When I teach my father the word for daughter he smiles, repeating “Tochter” to himself until he gets it right, and in that moment German sounds like pride. There’s nothing angry or ugly about a language that never says goodbye, only “until we meet again.”
Thank you for this
I remember, when I started learning English, I was always amazed by how final ‘goodbye’ feels in comparison to German’s common ‘Auf Wiedersehen’ (literally: “Until we see each other again”). But what really struck me was, when I heard the German translation for Farewell for the first time. It’s “Fahr wohl”, which basically means “may your journey be good”.
So yeah, German may sound harsher to people, who are more used to soft consonants and sh-noises, but if you actually pay attention to the words we use, I personally feel that it is a much gentler and warmer language, than people give it credit for.
Please don’t take your pets for granted. Even if you’re frustrated that your dog has been barking all day or your bird has been screaming for attention, remember you are all they have in this world. Give your fish that extra water change. Give your dog or cat that tummy rub they’ve been begging for. Chop up some fresh fruit as a treat for your rodents or reptiles. Just spend some time with them. Be compassionate to your animals. They are living creatures that are alive simply because you wish them to be. They may only be a small part in your life, but to them, you are their everything.
